In 1810 the Reverend Henry Duncan took the revolutionary step of creating a bank whose sole purpose was to help hardworking local people.
He believed that was the best way to help them, and the communities they lived in, to thrive.
Today his ideals live on.
We are back in over 630 communities across Britain with the same purpose: to support safe and sustainable economic growth in the communities that surround us.
Bringing this kind of safe, straightforward banking back to our 5 million customers doesn’t just help each and every saver, it also allows us to lend more to our local households and businesses, enabling them to get on. It can also help introduce wider financial stability and stronger local economies to the communities we all live in.
We call this "local banking".
